In Africa, the burden of disease attributable to environmental determinants, and the consequent socioeconomic impact, is substantial. In 2008, African Ministers of Health and Ministers responsible for the environment came together in Libreville, Gabon to seek a new intersectoral approach to the problems thus identified. The Ministers agreed on the “Libreville Declaration on Health and Environment in Africa”, which was supplemented in 2010 by the “Luanda Commitment”, highlighting the importance of managing the interlinkages between health and environment as a means of achieving sustainable development.
