The Global Environment Facility (GEF)-supported ‘Strategic Partnership for the Mediterranean Sea Large Marine Ecosystem – Regional Component: Implementation of agreed actions for the protection of the environmental resources of the Mediterranean Sea and its coastal areas’ was implemented by UNEP and executed by UNEP Mediterranean Action Plan (MAP) Coordinating Unit from August 2009- December 2015. Thirteen countries were the major project beneficiaries: Albania, Algeria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Egypt, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Montenegro, Palestinian Territories, Syria, Tunisia, and Turkey. The main purpose of the Regional Component was to support implementation of the Strategic Action Programme to Address Pollution from Land-based Activities (SAP MED), the Strategic Action Programme for the Conservation of Biological Diversity in the Mediterranean Region (SAP BIO), and National Action Plans (NAPs), and to prepare the ground for implementation of the Integrated Coastal Zone Management Protocol of the Barcelona Convention. The two primary purposes of the this terminal evaluation were 1) to provide evidence of results to meet accountability requirements; and 2) to promote learning, feedback, and knowledge sharing through results and lessons learned among UNEP and the executing partners.
